The woodcuts are based on Palestinian embroidery patterns
and the guide fabric used to learn cross-stitch techniques. The
patterns represent different aspects of the landscape and the
colours are inspired by the tradition of using ‘life’ colours, orange,
red, pink, for bridal clothes and blue for widows. In the past women
would sew bridal dresses with symbols from both local nature and
which show what the family owns, how many fields and exactly
where they are from; similar to Norwegian embroidery tradition.
If the husband died the whole skirt would be unpicked and resewn
in blue.
